The Sandbox Studio alpha kicks off
The Sandbox has initiated its alpha program for The Sandbox Studio, an AI-powered game development environment. Of more than 12,000 applications, only 30 creators have been admitted thus far. The selected developers come with backgrounds in platforms like Roblox, Unity, and Unreal Engine, and they’ve also worked with AI coding tools such as OpenAI Codex.
To expedite product improvement, The Sandbox is deliberately limiting access. This strategy allows direct support and quick feedback from users, speeding up the development cycle significantly. The company plans to admit up to 10 additional creators each week as it prepares for a larger beta game jam.
Game Jam and technical updates
The first closed alpha Game Jam commenced last week. This event encourages creators not only to make games but also serves as a production test for various components including the Studio editor and asset pipeline. Early feedback has already led to several technical updates, enhancing the Studio’s starter templates for various game genres.
Access and Creator Portal changes
Access to the Studio is also becoming less tied to GitHub. A new Creator Portal allows approved users to log in with their Sandbox accounts and download the editor directly. Alpha whitelisting remains in place, but that restriction is expected to end with the public beta.
Development roadmap ahead
Looking ahead, The Sandbox outlined several development priorities, including multiplayer foundations, leaderboard services, and new asset collections. Enhancements are also planned for in-editor support for The Sandbox’s AI assistant, Agent Nova, and compatibility with existing character rigging systems.
In addition to these features, The Sandbox is hosting weekly livestreams on Twitch where developers engage with the creator community, demonstrating features and answering questions.
The timeline for the public beta has not been established, but the ongoing incremental admissions and Game Jam activities suggest a gradual approach to broader access.
